Thousands of children die every year in car accidents, and most of them could have been prevented if they were in a proper baby car seat, or booster seat. There are a large variety of baby car seats to choose from, but it is encouraging that every one must be approved by the government. When trying to choose a baby car seat, be sure to place your child in it, and adjust the harness. If you can, place it in your car to see how it fits. There are some rules when using baby car seats, which must be followed in order to keep your baby safe.
- Until your baby reaches twenty pounds and is one year old, they must be in a rear facing baby car seat.
- Once your baby reaches one year of age and weights twenty pounds, they can use forward facing baby car seats.
- Eventually, a booster seat may be necessary (usually indicated when their ears reach the top of the seat or shoulders are above the harness slots)
The best way to keep your child safe in the car is to use baby car seats, and be sure to always use your seatbelt. This will set a good example, and ensure they continue the use of seatbelt like devices for the rest of their life.
