When looking to purchase child safety gates, there are a few different safety features you should be especially concerned about:

  • Look for a frame that connects to a door frame and does not have any gaps for the heads or fingers of children
  • There should be less than a one or two inch gap between the floor and the bottom of the child safety gate.
  • The slats should be no more than 3 centimeters apart to prevent children from getting caught
  • Be sure there are no sharp edges anywhere on the child safety gate
  • Do not use gates with potential foot holds, your child may climb on them

Many older child safety gate models were created with different slats that allowed your childs head to get stuck easily. This resulted in a large amount of child strangulations. Be sure to pick a more recent design, which will be safer and more effective and keeping your child away from dangerous areas of the home.
