No home or business, not matter how well prepared, can prevent all fire hazards from starting a fire. But this doesn't mean that families and employees have to live in constant fear of losing important documents or family heirlooms. Fire cabinets can help protect items from a potential fire.

Fire cabinets are made to protect items from flame and high temperatures. They are labeled by a special rating system that determines the level of protection they provide. Fire cabinets can receive a one or two hour rating, which is based on the number of hours that the fire cabinet can keep its contents below 350 degrees Fahrenheit while the exterior is exposed to temperatures up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. One hour rated cabinets can last for one hour in such conditions. The fire cabinets use tight construction and insulation to keep the contents safe. Many fire cabinets are also made to be impact resistant and water resistant in order to further protect files. Water resistant fire cabinets may sound slightly ironic, but they can be useful if an automated sprinkler system or other water source is used to fight the fire.

Fire cabinets come in all the standard file cabinet sizes, including two, three, and four drawers, and vertical or horizontal cabinets. Some companies can even customize a fire cabinet for a customer. These manufacturers also offer fire resistant safes, for combined protection from fire and theft.
