These products can receive a one or two hour rating, which is based on the number of hours that it can keep its contents below 350 degrees Fahrenheit while the exterior is exposed to temperatures up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. One-hour rated cabinets can last for one hour in such conditions. These structures use tight construction and insulation to keep the contents safe. Many of these are also made to be impact-resistant and water-resistant in order to further protect files. Water-resistant cabinets for fire protection may sound slightly ironic, but they can be useful if an automated sprinkler system or other water source is used to fight the fire.

These products come in all the standard file cabinet sizes, including two, three, and four drawers, and vertical or horizontal cabinets. Some companies can even customize a cabinet for a customer. These manufacturers also offer fire-resistant safes, for combined protection from fire and theft.
